The reasons to choose ISP Ltd.

Why choose ISP Ltd?

Your packages look good, but I'm not quite convinced. Why should I trust ISP Ltd. instead of doing it myself, hiring the local computer guy, or hiring one of the large telecomms?

If you could do it yourself that would save the most money, but unless you have established an ISP before you may not realise what you are in for. You might be looking here because you have established an ISP before and don't want to go through that again.

Purchasing a turnkey package from ISP Ltd. let's you get started tomorrow. While we are building your network, you can be ordering your backbone and getting everything ready. In as little as six weeks from tomorrow your ISP network could be arriving at your door — ready to plug in, spend a couple of weeks in training over the Internet with the engineer who built your network, and then start serving customers with the confidence that if anything goes wrong you have an engineer in British Columbia ready to back you up. We don't know of any other company of any size who can give you that kind of peace-of-mind along with a fully configured, tested, ready-to-plug-and-play network in less time than that (unless you are buying a pre-existing business).

We test your entire network — 'live' on the Internet where you can test it, too — for about two weeks before shipping, so we are as certain as humanly possible that everything will work perfectly when you get it.

Choose ISP Ltd. for one of the reasons you might choose a large telecomm vendor: Experience. The man who builds and programmes your servers has been building and programming computers for a long time. We have established several ISPs before yours. Even our first customer had over 20 years of computer experience at his disposal (in a single person, that is) and is still operating his ISP today.

If you are in Africa, our knowledge of the business challenges there could be helpful. Although we are not based in Africa, we have customers there, have visited there, and have talked to hundreds of prospective African ISPs from just about every country on the continent. With this base of knowledge we will start with some mutual understanding that few other North American companies can offer. This will let us help and advise you better, and perhaps we can even help prepare you for some possible stumbling blocks. Our client and representative in Luanda, Angola invites prospective African ISPs to visit, so please write to us if you are interested in this.

Cost: If you can get a telecomm vendor to give you a price, you're either going to think that they are talking about something totally different from what ISP Ltd. is selling or you are going to stop talking to them. ISP Ltd. went against Lucent and Schlumberger, bidding our top-of-the-line Metropolitan HC package for a new telecomm. We won. That network is operating today in Lagos, Nigeria.

We offer expertise in designing and configuring networks for ISPs based on the GNU/Linux operating system, which is based on the time-tested Unix developed by the US government and Bell Labs in the 1960s. With GNU/Linux you have the security features of Unix along with a marvelous array of software, all of which (except for the billing software) has unlimited licensing so you can grow as large as you want and never pay a licensing fee. In addition to cost savings, GNU/Linux offers the best combination of networking speed, security, support, and range of software of any operating system. If you have seen advertising to the contrary, it is wrong; even the organisation that puts out those ads depends on Unix for their largest server network.

100 Percent Optimised: We install all server software from source code so it is optimised for your hardware. Contrast this to the common commercial operating system that starts with a 'W', which comes pre-compiled for a vast range of hardware. The difference between optimised and generalised software is evidenced in up to ten times the operating speed with large applications. It takes a long time to prepare a server this way, but we think achieving ultimate performance is worth the effort.

Why are your prices so low?

ISP Ltd. uses a very efficient 'just-in-time' concept for everything from inventory to personnel. This keeps costs low while also closely following the leading-edge of technology. We don't have any old parts in some warehouse, we buy everything new for each project. There are no pre-programmed servers waiting to ship; we use the latest techniques and software to programme each server as it is ordered. There is no swanky office with the related payroll. If a project calls for extra people, we hire industry professionals from around the world as needed.

Why are your prices so high?

For everyone who thinks our prices are amazingly low, there is always another who thinks they are too high. People will add up the cost of a half-dozen mail-order servers and wonder why an entire turnkey package doesn't cost only that much.

Remember to add the cost of premium servers, rack, UPS, switches, console, cables, tools, and a few hundred hours of the time of a network engineer, software engineer, and perhaps other specialists you may need to complete the entire project. When you are finished, the final figure should be equal to or higher than the cost of a turnkey package from ISP Ltd. (if not, you are probably forgetting something).
